The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has asked the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, to step down from the position following his defection from the party to All Progressives Congress, APC, Tuesday.

Mr. Tambuwal announced his defection from PDP to APC shortly after plenary before the House went on recess till December. The speaker only last week denied media reports that he had joined the opposition party when he attended a meeting of the APC in Sokoto State.

His formal declaration for APC brings to an end months of speculation as to where his true political allegiance lies.

Reacting to the development, the ruling PDP yesterday said it had met with the party caucus in the House and after a thorough consideration of the matter, the National Working Committee came to a conclusion that he should vacate the seat of speaker since he got the position based on the numerical strength of the party.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, in a statement issued in Abuja, said that Tambuwal, as a responsible elected officer knows fully well what is “needful and honourable” of him since his new party is in the minority in the House of Representatives.

The statement by the party reads in part: “We are not unmindful of the fact that Hon. Tambuwal became Speaker on the platform of the PDP as the political party with the majority of seats in the House of Representatives and that this incontrovertible fact has not changed”.
